At the Vancouver tournament, on the last play of the day, (while most
players are packing their bags and babbling noisily about the first 8
games), I got to bingo out through an E (at H1) and a D (at O1) with the
following rack:

I didn't need the bingo to win otherwise I would have really been babbling
noisily also.
That got me thinking this week...
Scrabble and all these good moments. What is the ultimate euphoria. What
makes the Scrabble world turn?
Many talk about the 9 letter word (or 10, 11...) through disconnected
letters especially. But that didn't do it for me, at least not this somewhat
easy one. The 3 X 3 ? You're asking the wrong guy. After playing in
tournaments since 1984, I only got one (though INTHRONE is no RETAINED or
STAINERS).
So I said to myself, go figure! Here's what I think would please me best:
#1: The supercute 3 X 3, like Siri Tillekeratne's CIOPPINO, or even better,
a 9 letter word 3 x 3 that is rare and a separate entry (as opposed to an
inflection of as 6, 7or 8) like, why sure, SUPERCUTE.
When you get one of those, you start paying attention to your total score.
It's fun to dream on...
#2: The endgame great strategy play that might take care of the 110 points
I'm trailing by.
My rack is CCILMOX, and there are 4 letters in the bag, 3 unseen A's, so I
play COMIX on A3, downward. My oppo# adds "ES" to it for 54 pts. I
challenge... I got my A, and play CAcomixL for 188 pts (and just as he
makes his next play, ...I wake up...)
#3: I really get OVERexcited by extensions. When studying pays off, you get
to add "WEE" to KLONG or KNIGHT, "BEE" to FEATER and "ECK" to HATCH.
Last month, Jesse Mathews (only 18 then) was happy to add "BAR" to YONIC
for 45 points (and lose the game). My favorite one was MUSquash for 66pts
en route to a 629 game.. Once, I seen the 60 pts MADzoons coming at me, in
the final endplay and blocked it, winning by a tidbit. Albert still talks to
me. He's a nice guy.
#4: We all want to make that big long word through a bunch of disconnected
letters. Only one person really blew the roof to SMITHEREENS in doing so. I
don't know who he/she is, but unless it involves having a sex change, I
would like to be that person
#5: Can you ever pick! How ugly! Only U's, several G's and L's, and a P.
You realize 2 things: You will score 0 next turn and your life has been
curtailed by whatever time your oppo# takes to make his move. Because he
took a while and sarcastically played HAPPY, his "Y", of all things, changes
the way you will look at life. You bingo. It's still ugly. It's PLUGUGLY for
some seventyish score. But all of a sudden, there is a God and light at the
end of the tunnel. Tomorrow is another day, as the tournament continues.
#6: They don't need to know you studied it only 2 weeks ago. You played
ZEMSTVA on a triple word for 143 pts and you win the prize for highest bingo
at the tournament (over the previous best, the 3 x 3 DETAINED for 139 pts).
And if that's not enough, you have the luck of the Irish; your adversary
just put an "S" at the end of it. All the bonnies# in the room will hear
about this game.
I played ZEMSTVO on ISC yesterday. That's a different story. I knew I made
an enemy. I am on his black list tonight.
#7: Thanks to your anagram abilities, you made the right pick. DECRIALS and
RADICLES where too easy, but you picked RADICELS for the same 86 pts. And
because radicel looks like a misspelling or an instance of mislaying tiles
AND, especially, because you look like you are as dumb as a doornail, you
just got yourself a challenge. I even went as far as pronouncing it
"RADICLES for 86 pts" and hitting my clock (back in '85). But don't try that
now. The rules committee took the fun out of Scrabble since then...
#8: He's no dumby. Not only did he win the world's, he also is the highest
rated player in this tournament. No wonder he hooked his bingo to BACTERIA,
forming BACTERIAL. But you got back in the lead, hooking yours to BACTERIAL,
forming ABACTERIAL.
#9: The bingos are coming out of my ears, they are hitting every corner of
the board, and even though the blanks and the good letters are all gone, I
still welcome COLOBOMA for 78 pts. Calgary always has the BINGO ACE award at
its tournament. I can't think of any awards that comes as close to it,
providing this "Scrabble satisfaction".
Well, maybe first place!
#10: Playing on the top floor of the Masonic lodge in Vancouver (a huge
room surrounded by window on three sides with the most gorgeous city in
Canada on the other side of it). The club is dynamic, the organizers are
fantastic, the restaurants are exquisite, even our hotels nearby were dirt
cheap. Sometimes, it is the people or the places that leave you with the
best souvenirs. And big is not always best. The Canadian championship format
is invitation to the 50 best (peek rating) players, and they replace
cancellations by going down the list to the 51rst, 52nd,... Making the cut,
that's a good feeling.
Everyone has there own favorite turn-on in this game. The strategists
might choose 10 brainy plays out of 10; some might get their kicks
delivering a "Q" stick and others might just love the to achieve those big
scores. There are so many thrills in our game; it would be easy to go to up
to #30, #50, ...

I was feeling particularly cocky about my 350 pt average until I got online, did some Googling, and realized I am an amateur among amateurs. I had no idea competitive Scrabble even existed. There is so much strategy and word knowledge I was never privy to until 45 minutes ago...it simply blows my mind! Suffice it to say that I was totally DISheartened (to make the appropriate thematic "hook") by my own abilities. I was reading and standing in awe of author George Mcauly's command of the English language........right up to the last paragraph........where he spelled "their" as "there." A minor salvage to my significantly diminished ego. |
